Billet reading is a practice often associated with psychic mediums and mentalists, in which the practitioner provides information about a person's question or issue written on a billet.
A billet is a small piece of paper that is usually folded to conceal its contents before being handed over to the medium or mentalist. The term "billet" itself is quite old-fashioned and derives from the French word for a small note or letter.
In a typical billet reading session, participants are asked to write down their questions or concerns on a billet. These questions often touch on deeply personal matters, reflecting the hopes, worries, and uncertainties that occupy their thoughts. Common themes include guidance on relationships, family dynamics, or friendships; insights into career and financial concerns; questions about specific health issues; as well as broader questions about life's mysteries.
After writing on the billet, it is folded over to conceal what has been written and handed over to the medium, either directly or by placing it in a pot with other billets. The medium will focus on one billet at a time. They might hold it to their forehead or simply hold it in their hands. The idea is that the medium uses psychic abilities to provide answers or insights without physically opening or reading the paper. They claim to receive the information through spiritual guidance or psychic impressions, rather than through any physical means.
This practice has its roots in the spiritualist movements of the 19th and early 20th centuries, where mediums gave various demonstrations of their connection to the spiritual world. Billet reading is sometimes used in séances, where it is believed that spirits communicate through the medium to provide the requested information.
Billet reading could fit into several categories of psychic abilities, depending on the medium's explanation of how they receive the information. One possibility is clairvoyance, the ability to obtain information or insights in the form of visual images. This might allow the medium to see the written question or receive visual impressions related to the answer.
Billet reading could also be a demonstration of clairaudience, where the medium hears the answers communicated to them by spirits or guides. Perhaps claircognisance is at play too. This involves receiving knowledge or understanding directly from the spirit world, allowing a medium to simply "know" the answer to the question. There may even be an element of clairsentience if the medium is able to pick up on a physical sensation or emotional impression through their contact with the billet.
While often presented as a genuine psychic phenomenon, skeptics argue that it is nothing more than a trick that involves techniques rooted in the art of deception. Sleight of hand, for instance, is a key element. A skilled practitioner can discreetly open or peek at the billet without the participant noticing. This might be done by subtly unfolding the paper while it is being handled, using a quick glance or hidden mirror to read its contents.
Mediums or mentalists might also rely on subtle clues from those they are giving the reading to, picking up on body language, facial expressions, and other non-verbal cues that can provide insight into the nature of their questions. Even the way a person folds their billet or the manner in which they hand it over can offer hints about the contents.
Pre-show research is another method used by some billet readers to enhance their performances. By gathering information about participants beforehand, mediums can tailor their readings to be startlingly accurate. This research can be as simple as casual conversations with the audience before the show or more elaborate investigations using social media and other publicly available resources, such as social media profiles. Armed with this information, the medium can appear to know intimate details that seem impossible to discern without genuine psychic abilities.
The medium's ability to present the gathered information convincingly, often with dramatic flair, reinforces the belief in their supernatural powers. For the audience, the experience feels deeply personal and often profoundly moving, regardless of the methods used to achieve it.
