Why I Wouldn't Share My Views On Crystal Healing With A Friend

This article is more than seven years old.
A few years back my friend was going through a tough time, she felt drained emotionally and was often physically ill with various aches, pains and ailments. One thing that really helped her was crystal healing, a subject which interests me but when my friend asked me about it, I refused to talk about the topic and here's why...

My friend had quite a firm belief in the power of stones and crystal, body energies and chakras. She once told me how a problem she had which gave her difficulties speaking may not be a psychical problem with her throat but was in fact her bodies way of telling her that she had things she should be telling people but couldn't.
She believed that a pain in the head may indicate pent up stress, anger or frustration but by visiting a crystal healer and having crystals laid on various part of her body, often corresponding to chakras, the energy they released not only ease the discomfort of physical pain but also helped her overcome stress and her emotional issues.
One day she phoned me after a session, she was sounding particularly bright and told me how beneficial the healing had been, I was pleased that crystals were working for her but then she asked "what do you think about crystal healing?"
I responded by saying "I don't really want to talk about that," my friend got angry and started to rant a little, "why not? I always listen to you when you talk about 'internet' stuff and the things you are interested in? Why won't you talk about something I'm interested in?"
I was in a difficult situation, even by explaining why I didn't want to talk about it I could shatter her belief system. In hindsight I should have told her "I don't know much about it but it's great if it's working for you" but I'd paused for too long considering my answer to give such a casual response.
The truth is, I'm far from uninterested in my friends life, I'd even go as far as to say I'm interested in crystal healing but I don't believe in it. Many scientific studies have been carried out on claims of chakras and body energy and no evidence has ever been found that crystal healing has any effect beyond that of a placebo.
Clearly my friend was benefiting from the placebo effect, her belief that crystals will help her was so strong that it did make her feel better. It eased her stress, relaxed her and reduce her sensation of physical pain.
So, I couldn't say to her "I don't think there's anything in it" because if she believed me, it would stop working for her, if I told her the reason I didn't want to talk about it was because I didn't want to change her believes and risk the treatment becoming ineffective for her.
All I could do was agree with her when she said I was a "horrible friend" and let her question why I am so disinterested in anything she has to say.
