Sony Pictures have officially announced a release date for the 'Ghostbusters Afterlife' sequel, the fifth movie in the supernatural franchise.
Based on the success of the 2021 film, it was first announced that a sequel was on the way earlier this year, but now more details about the next instalment, including a release date, have been announced.
The as yet unnamed sequel to 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife', which has the working title 'Firehouse', will premiere on December 20, 2023.
As the post-credits sequence for the last movie hinted at, the action in the next movie will take place back in New York, the city which was the home of the original series.
At the end of 'Afterlife' we saw ECTO-1 driving over Brooklyn Bridge and saw Ernie Hudson's character, Winston Zeddemore, arriving at the old firehouse. It turns out that Winston is now a successful businessman who's been keeping the former Ghostbusters base ticking over all these years, but more importantly, keeping check on the ecto containment unit.
We also know that the plot will continue to revolve around the Spengler family, who were introduced in the 2021 film. That's Callie, played by Carrie Coon, and her two children played by Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace, who are of course the grandchildren of original Ghostbuster, Egon.
Although, there’s been no official word from Sony on who will be reprising their roles. We don't even know for sure if Jason Reitman will take on directing duties again, as he did with the 2021 film, which took $44 million in its domestic box office debut, and grossed more than $200m worldwide. The movie still holds a very respectable audience score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The details about the film's sequel were announced during Ghostbusters Day. Reitman said, "we're writing another movie. Tonight, we're going to share the code name for the next chapter in the Spengler family story. The last time we saw ECTO-1, it was driving back into Manhattan: the home of Ghostbusters. That's where our story begins. The code name is FIREHOUSE."
As well as the upcoming sequel, there's also a video game and an animated film and an animated Netflix series in the making, so there's plenty for 'Ghostbusters' fans to be excited about.
