Reports of mysterious drones have swept across the eastern United States in recent weeks, and President-Elect Donald Trump has now weighed in on the situation with typically bold remarks, suggesting the government may be withholding key information from the public. Trump claimed, "The government knows what is happening," before adding, "For some reason they don't want to tell the people, and they should."
The unusual drone activity first came to light in November, when reports began surfacing of bright lights spotted in the night sky. The earliest accounts came from New Jersey, but sightings quickly spread to other states. Locations as diverse as residential areas and secure military sites, including Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, have been affected. Even Donald Trump's own golf course in Bedminster has reportedly been a focal point for drone sightings.
Speaking at a press event at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump told reporters that the government and military already have knowledge of the drones' origins and movements. He said, "Our military knows, and our president knows, and for some reason, they want to keep people in suspense."

Since then, drones have been reported in at least six eastern states: New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Virginia. At one point, the drone sightings caused New York's Stewart International Airport to temporarily close its runways for an hour.
The federal government has responded, with officials acknowledging the presence of drones but downplaying their significance. The Pentagon has confirmed that the drones are not operated by the US military, while both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have stated that the drones pose no threat to national security. An FBI official commented, "I think there has been a slight overreaction." The agency also suggested that many sightings could be cases of "mistaken identity," where small, legally operated aircraft have been misinterpreted as drones.
The Department of Homeland Security echoed these sentiments, proposing that commercial drones might be behind the sightings. Meanwhile, military officials have ruled out any signs of malicious foreign involvement.
However, not everyone is convinced. One US Congressman claimed on Fox News that the drones are connected to an Iranian "mothership" operating off the East Coast of the United States. Despite this sensational claim, no evidence has emerged to support it, and it has been widely dismissed.
Trump has previously taken to social media to criticise the Biden administration's response. He wrote, "Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!"
Now, the president-elect has spoken more extensively about the mysterious drones during a Mar-a-Lago press briefing, where he made claims about the extent of the government's knowledge of the drones.
Trump said, "The government knows what is happening. Our military knows where they took off from. If it's a garage, they can go right into that garage. They know where it came from and where it went. And for some reason, they don't want to comment. And I think they'd be better off saying what it is. Our military knows, and our president knows, and for some reason, they want to keep people in suspense."
The President-Elect added, "I can't imagine it's the enemy, because if it was the enemy, they'd blast it out, even if they were late, they'd blast it. Something strange is going on, for some reason they don't want to tell the people, and they should."
The notion that the drones do not pose a threat but remain unexplained has left many wondering what the full truth might be. Trump's repeated suggestion that the government is intentionally withholding information has resonated with those who suspect there is more to the story.
When asked directly whether he had received an intelligence briefing on the matter, Trump declined to answer, simply stating, "I don't want to comment on that."
