Eden Camp Museum, a popular haunted location in Malton, Yorkshire, has been listed for sale by its family owners. The museum, known for its rich history and
paranormal activity, is a popular hotspot for ghost hunters and was featured on television's 'Most Haunted' in 2019.
The attraction, which hosts regular overnight paranormal investigations, is located on the site of a former WWII prisoner-of-war camp. Built in 1942 to house Italian prisoners, the camp later held German prisoners until the war's end. Following its use as a POW camp, the site served various purposes, including an agricultural holiday camp and a storage facility, before falling into disrepair.
In the mid-1980s, local businessman Stan Johnson acquired the abandoned and overgrown site, transforming it into the Eden Camp Museum. Today, the museum is made up of 33 huts, each depicting a different aspect of World War II, from the rise of the Nazi party to the eventual Allied victory.
Over nearly four decades, the family-run museum has become a cherished part of Yorkshire's historical and paranormal landscape, attracting around 125,000 visitors each year. However, the owners have decided to sell the site as they prepare for retirement. While no price has been disclosed, the family is seeking "substantial offers" through Christie & Co.
The museum, which is currently closed for the winter season, issued a statement on its award-winning attraction's website confirming its intent to reopen as usual later this year. Paula Peace, Director and daughter of the late Stan Johnson, said, "Following the announcement of the planned sale, it is very much business as usual. We are busy preparing for another fantastic year after the success of 2024, welcoming visitors to explore the collections and enjoy a host of events."
The site will reopen for half-term week on February 17, before resuming full operations for the 2025 season on March 29.
Paula added, "Howard and I are extremely proud that this has been a family business for 40 years and want to ensure Eden Camp is being sold with the intention that it stays as a museum for future generations to enjoy and continues to safeguard the incredible artefacts remain as part of this unique collection."
Eden Camp's reputation for paranormal activity was solidified during its feature on 'Most Haunted' in 2019. In the episode, team members Karl Beattie and Stuart Torevell experienced strange goings-on in the museum's wartime prefabricated house. A bicycle was seen being visibly dragged and knocked over, followed by unexplained knocking sounds on the door.
In Hut 7, known as "The Street at War" exhibit, the show's resident skeptic Glen Hunt appeared to communicate with a spirit using EMF meters. The meters consistently responded to his questions by flashing to their maximum level. Meanwhile, in the base room, two crew members experienced a series of unsettling incidents as the door repeatedly opened on its own.
Despite the sale, fans of the paranormal can rest assured that ongoing events at the site will not be interrupted. Most Haunted Experience, the events company linked to the TV show, has confirmed that their planned paranormal nights at Eden Camp throughout 2025 will go ahead as scheduled.
