With the threat of the Cold War looming in the late 80s the UK government made plans to hide underground and Burlington was born, but a German Democratic Republic bunker existed which dwarfed Burlington.

The Frauenwald bunker is situated in the small town of Frauenwald in the former East German state of Thuringia.

The former secret bunker was built in the late 70s/early 80s, and known as project 17/5001 and later the codenamed Pearl.

Built over an area of 3KM squared, over three levels, it contains 170 rooms designed to accommodate 400 members of the East German regime in the event of nuclear war.
