Paranormal Investigator
As a ghost hunter who doesn't believe in the paranormal, which tools do I have in my ghost hunting box and why did I chose these gadgets? It may seem odd to some people that I would waste my money on sudo-science gadget which have to proof or evidence to back-up the manufacturers claims that they can detect ghosts.

The reason I have these tools is that they do flash, alert and trigger while on investigations and a believer is always quick to label that activity as paranormal. I like to look for those same results but work out what measurable phenomenon is really effecting the device.

Flight Case

Firstly, here is where I store my ghost hunting kit, a Maplin flight case with foam interior which can be cut to size to accommodate different gadgets. It means everything can all be stored together at home and can be taken out easily.

Inside The Case

Here's all of my gadgets inside the case, the only thing I don't have in the case is my camera because that's not exclusively assigned to my ghost hunting kit, I use my camera for other things too.

GhostArk - Paranormal Multi-Tool

GhostArk Ghost Hunting Equipment

GhostArk, sold as "the all-in one ghost hunting tool" but why did I buy it if I don't believe in ghosts? Quite simply, I think it looks really cool with it's flashing lights and read-outs. It's packed full of sudo-science features like EMF meter, radio scanner and EVP recorder. Sadly the company that manufactures the device failed after the unsuccessful launch of the product.

Infrared Thermometer

Infrared Thermometer Ghost Hunting Equipment

A reasonably inexpensive thermometer, used by ghost hunters to detect "cold spots" by simply pointing and clicking. It should be noted that an infrared thermometer like this one doesn't read air temperature, so if someone feels a cold spot, pointing the laser at them is ineffective as it won't tell you if they're stood in a cold spot, it'll just read the temperature of their clothes, the wall behind them or whatever you're point it at. It's handy to have this on an investigation to disprove or corroborate claims of a cold spot.

KII EMF Meter

EMF Meter Ghost Hunting Equipment

This is a ghost hunters staple device, an electro-magnetic frequency meter, it's a robust device that is reliable and simple to use with nothing more than an on/off switch. It's highly sensitive and can detect fluctuations and spikes in the EM field from 50 to 1,000Hz, giving instant feedback via five LED lights. This device is great for determining whether EM could be the cause of reported sightings or paranormal activity.

Seben Night Vision Monocular

Night Vision Scope Ghost Hunting Equipment

Why do I have night vision goggles? Because they're cool! Who didn't want these as a kid? As an urban explorer it's fun to use in dark abandoned buildings and in the pitch black of underground spaces. It's also good for seeing what the naked eyes can't at a ghost hunt, perhaps allowing you to establish the source of a sound in the dark like an object falling.

Sony MP3 Digital Voice Recorder

Audio Recorder Ghost Hunting Equipment

A digital audio record is what ghost hunters use to capture EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). An EVP is a spirit voice which is captured, often the voice is caught by asking questions allowed during the investigating and although no sounds may be heard at the time, upon reviewing the recording voices and sounds can be heard. You can almost always catch something on the recording, the fun bit is listening back after and trying to establish what the cause of the sound actually is.

800 Lumens Tactical Flashlight Torch

Torch Ghost Hunting Equipment

Good for health and safety and an essential piece of kit when working in the dark. These 800 lumen tactical torches have great battery life, are incredibly bright and cost next to nothing.

Trigger Objects

Trigger Objects Ghost Hunting Equipment

Trigger objects are items which can be left around a haunted location which a ghost or spirit can interact with, for example they can make the pendulum swing or spin the needle on the compass. I also have a set of Kenner ESP cards for testing psychic abilities.

Ouija Board

Ouija boards are a great example of ideomotor suggestion, a group of people, when in the right setting can subconsciously influence the board and move the planchette to spell out a word. A location which is believed to be haunted is the perfect place to condition users to manipulate the board.

Nikon D3200 Digital SLR Camera

Capturing photographic evidence is a crucial part of a paranormal investigation so having the right camera is important, as a non-believer I too catch the same shadows, shapes and light anomalies in my photos, but I take the time to find a non-supernatural explanation for the occurrence. As for what's the best camera for paranormal research, there's just far too many to chose from. The most suitable camera for an investigation depends on your expertise as a photographer and your price range as the cost of good cameras range dramatically. From cheaper compact cameras to top of the range digital SLR cameras. To start you out in you research, here are the top five best selling cameras from 2016:
1. Canon EOS 70D
