The long-running British paranormal publication, Haunted Magazine, will soon be available alongside such prestigious titles as the Radio Times and New Scientist on the shelves of hundreds of WHSmith stores across the UK.
The magazine is a mix of articles about paranormal investigation, interviews with the stars of ghost hunting television shows, and supernatural movie news. It will land in high street stores across the country just in time for the publication of its 32nd edition in December.
This is huge news for an independently run magazine, especially one which has become a much-loved part of the British paranormal scene and beyond. The quarterly magazine, produced by Dead Good Publishing, is a world-class publication thanks to its editor, Paul Stevenson, and the outstanding design skills of Andy Soar - both of whom head up Dead Good.
For over a decade Haunted Magazine has been a must-read for any fan of the paranormal. The publication is already available digitally worldwide, and here in the UK and in America in physical print as a one-off purchase or annual subscription via haunteddigitalmagazine.com. It's hard to ignore the reach of the magazine when you're an active part of the paranormal community, but this new deal with a retail giant will mean the magazine now has the potential to reach a whole new audience, the audience it deserves.
Andy said, "whenever we get asked about the magazine, the first question is almost always 'can I get it in WHSmith?' It's almost a frustration to us as we've been running successfully from our website and more recently the online Newsstand."
He continues, "WHSmith in the UK is instantly the most recognised store for magazines and from our perspective the biggest shop window that we can ask for. So when the opportunity arose, it's something that we talked about for a while. But we just couldn't shake the fact that we simply needed to represent our brilliant writers and our advertisers that make Haunted so unique in the best way possible."
This shop window presence means that even those with a passing interest in ghost stories or the latest supernatural movie releases, who aren't aware such a magazine exists will now have the joy of stumbling across it as they browse the titles on offer at one of WHSmith's high street stores, as well as branches in transport hubs.
Andy added, "we've broken new ground in the US through Barnes and Noble so it only seems fitting that we should try and do the same domestically. It's a massive logistical challenge which we know will involve some costs along the way, but we the know the audience potential is massive and to get to where we really want to be this can only happen by increasing our visibility and WHSmiths seems to be a logical step forward"
Paul Stevenson, the mag's editor broke the news on Twitter last week. He wrote, "#HauntedMagazine is proud to announce that from #haunted32, we will be available in @WHSmith stores across the UK. This is a testament to the hard work, determination & support of everyone involved in #teamhaunted: writers, readers and supporters. Thank you."

Paul told us, "we heard someone say that we bring the paranormal into the spotlight a different way to others, and we kind of get what they're saying. There are so many ways you can write about and interpret the paranormal, be it from a personal perspective, a timeline of hauntings or even an historical angle, to name but three, but if you write and design it in a way that more people are potentially drawn into reading it, then we see that as a good thing."
2021 has been a good year for the magazine and its passionate team of regular and guest writers.
In March it was announced that the mag had pulled off a similar deal with the US retailer, Barnes & Noble. Since July, the latest editions of the magazine have been available in over 500 stores across the United States. Although still in a three-issue trial period, the response to the news from the other side of the pond has been overwhelmingly positive.
Paul continued, "we are blessed with some fantastic writers for Haunted Magazine, an eclectic mix of types and when you marry that up with the wealth of paranormal stories out there, famous, infamous and some not well known it can only be a good thing that more people have the chance to access, read and enjoy the stories of the paranormal and that's what being in WHSmiths can bring. We embrace the paranormal, we hug the supernatural and we high-five things that go bump in the night. It maybe Andy and myself that people know as Haunted Magazine, but we are but a small part of #teamHaunted, which include a myriad of writers, readers and supporters, who are passionate about the paranormal and understand what Haunted Magazine is all about (we hope anyway)"
Issue 32 of Haunted Magazine will be available in WHSmith stores in the UK from December 7, and for American readers from Barnes & Noble stores across the USA as the stateside trial continues.
