In the first episode of a brand-new sixth series of 'Help! My House Is Haunted', as the team uncover and attempt to communicate with the ghostly spirit of a notorious highwayman, the cameras capture the moment Barri Ghai's necklace chain is pulled from behind by a suspected spirit.

After his grandfather's sad passing, doting mother Lucy had always hoped that her young son Ben would be able to move into her parents' 19th century cottage in Thetford. But a terrified Lucy and Ben have been frightened to death by the lingering, thick atmosphere present at the property, both convinced that evil spirits lurk inside its four walls.

"I couldn't live there now, I couldn't go to sleep at night feeling secure, I couldn't go to sleep full stop!" worries Ben. "I can't go there because I am scared to death… I was aware that there was something not right with the house. The atmosphere in the cottage is thick," explains mother Lucy.

In the episode, which is available to stream on Discovery+ now, a panicked and rattled Lucy and Ben turn to paranormal investigator Barri, as well as his team mates Jayne Harris and Ian Lawman, in a desperate final attempt to rid the cottage of its unnerving atmosphere. "It would be more than heart-breaking to sell it, this is our last resort," sighs Ben.

But during the investigation, Barri's necklace was pulled from behind by the suspected phantom highwayman was caught on camera.

As Jayne, Barri and Ian arrive at the cottage to help provide Lucy and Ben, the team immediately feel uneasy. "I've just got a sudden wave of sickness as soon as I saw it," says Jayne. "I don’t want to get out the car," agrees psychic medium Ian, who unlike Barri and Jayne hasn't seen case notes and uses his psychic senses to guide him as he enters the property.

Upon entering the cottage, Ian explores on his own. "Wow, I can't let go of my bag. I'd normally always put my bag down as I come in. There's a real heaviness in this house," says Ian, who opts to do something he's never done when walking around a property before and carries a bible with him for protection. "It's very dense and very heavy. There's a lot of fear in this house," he adds.

Hoping to uncover answers as to why there might be a darkness surrounding Lucy and Ben's cottage, Jayne heads into town to meet with historian and friend of the team, Neil Storey.

Meeting on top of Thetford castle mound, Neil's historical knowledge begins to provide some crucial context for the local area, as he points out that its position on the road from Norwich to London once made it a regular hotspot for highwaymen, with Neil having one particularly notorious figure in mind.

Neil told Jayne, "Rich pickings around here for highwaymen. One of the most infamous highwaymen used to ply these roads around here. His name was Jeremiah Pratt." As Jayne learns more about Jeremiah Pratt, she discovers that the locals referred to him as "Mad Tom," and Neil informs her that he was "violent, would stop at nothing, he would rob anybody and take anything that he desired. He was evil and he was hanged for his crimes in 1746. He was always very proud that he had robbed more horses than Dick Turpin."

Putting the pieces together, Jayne recalls how Lucy had told her she would often see "the figure of a highwayman-like character, who she actually calls Dick Turpin. It's a bit worrying to think that we may be dealing with the thieving spirit of a highwayman," she says.

Back at the cottage, the team guide Lucy and Ben through a spirit trigger session in the kitchen, in an attempt to contact any lurking spirits and ascertain whether Jeremiah Pratt might be in their midst. They attempt to communicate by using an audio recorder in the hopes of capturing spirit voices in the recordings. The team are shocked to receive a response that seemed to be saying, "Leave me alone."

The team's investigation then turns to the use of a "dual-scrying" method in which Lucy and Ben try to spot the spirits in the reflection of two mirrors, as they sit at the kitchen table in low, atmospheric red lighting, with Jayne explaining that the choice of lighting "relaxes the very small muscles around the eye, so it enables you to see things that you wouldn't necessarily see in ordinary light."

Before long, Barri notes that Lucy has experienced transfiguration, and seen another face in the mirror, which they believe to be that of Jeremiah Pratt. Lucy once again references the highwayman look of the spirit entity, who reacts negatively when compared to notorious highwayman Dick Turpin. "I don’t think he likes the fact that you compare him to Dick Turpin," Jayne notes. "He's snarling at me," a visibly shaken Lucy agrees.

As the team's investigations continue with a spirit box, Barri experiences an unbelievably shocking brush with the spirit entity. In an alarming moment captured by the team's cameras, Barri's necklace chain seems to be visibly yanked from the back of his neck, by one of the spirits present. As they review the footage, a stunned Barri states "the footage shows something clearly pulling at my necklace. We need to find out who that was." Communicating via a spirit box to ask who had tried to steal the necklace, the team are met with a response of "it wasn’t me," from a spirit they later discover to be called Peter.

Peter helps the team by seemingly revealing the presence of imps in the property. Barri explains, "Imps are low level, mysterious entities who feed off negativity." An accomplice of Mad Tom, the team discover that Peter became trapped in the property as a result of the imps, with Jayne pondering, "Did their murderous or robbing thieving activity imprint this land with such negativity that the imps were drawn here and that once the imps were here, it almost meant that Peter and Tom couldn’t leave?"

The team must now do everything they can to banish these imps from the cottage, in order to help highwaymen Mad Tom and Peter pass on from the property. Will the team be able to cleanse the house of the evil spirits that haunt its four walls? Will Lucy's son Ben ever be able to live safely in his grandparents' former house? Tune in to the new series of 'Help! My House Is Haunted' to find out.
