New Line Cinema, the studio behind the original 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' film and its many sequels, has offered a brief but promising update on a potential reboot of the long-running franchise. Although no new instalment has been officially announced, the studio has confirmed that the possibility is still very much alive.
The last time Freddy appeared on screen was in the 2010 reboot of 'A Nightmare On Elm Street', starring Jackie Earle Haley in the role made famous by Robert Englund. Despite mixed reactions from fans and critics, the film went on to become the highest-grossing title in the franchise, taking more than $117 million at the global box office. By comparison, the original 1984 film earned around $57 million worldwide.
Following a recent April Fool's joke made by Haley that suggested a sequel was in the works, New Line Cinema's President and Chief Creative Officer, Richard Brener, was asked directly about the future of the franchise during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
When asked if a new 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' film is in active development, Brener replied, "We hope so. It's complicated because of the rights." He explained that while New Line still holds international rights to the series, the U.S. rights reverted to the estate of the late Wes Craven in 2019, which has created some legal complexities.
Robert Englund, who famously portrayed Freddy Krueger in eight films between 1984 and 2003, recently confirmed that he won't be returning to the role. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, he said, "There's no Freddy left in me," explaining that due to his age, he's no longer able to take on the physical demands of the character. However, Englund did say he would be open to voicing Freddy in an animated project.
Back in 2019, Englund shared his thoughts on who might be the right person to take on a reboot of the franchise. Speaking at the time, he named Jordan Peele as a filmmaker he'd like to see take the reins, saying, "There's extraordinary work being done right now. I don't want to live in a world without Jordan Peele. 'Get Out' is absolute genius."
Although there are currently no confirmed plans for a new film, interest in reviving 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' remains high, and fans will be watching closely for any further developments.
