Residents of Morris County, a region in northern New Jersey, have reported sightings of large numbers of mysterious drones appearing in the night sky, moving methodically in patterns that leave communities scratching their heads. These unexplained sightings, which have spread across the state, have now prompted an investigation by the FBI, the United States' national security and law enforcement agency.
Nichole Berlie, an anchor for the US-based news network NewsNation, recently spoke with Mayor Sam Morris of Mine Hill Township, a small community within Morris County, to shed light on the phenomenon. The mayor recounted his own experiences and those of his constituents, painting a vivid picture of the strange activity.
Reports of drones first surfaced in mid-November. One of the earliest accounts came from a local resident who saw eight drones hovering over an elementary school and municipal complex - central locations within the township. By the time Mayor Morris arrived at the scene, just a short drive away, the drones had already moved east towards Dover, another town in the area.
"I've been hearing about them since last Tuesday," Mayor Morris explained. "One of my neighbours on the block said there were eight overhead over our elementary school and municipal complex. So I got in my car and I rode around, and by the time I got there, which is only about half a mile, the drones had all moved east over the town of Dover, New Jersey. Kind of in between, there's a large county park, and they were everywhere."
Describing his observations, Morris said, "I have a video of four with a kind of stationary drone. What it appeared to us was there's one drone that was just stationary and four were going back and forth in a scanning pattern. That's my own personal observation." He added that some residents reported seeing up to 12 drones over a local lake on another night, but attempts to capture them on camera failed due to poor image quality, leaving only grainy dots visible on mobile phones.

When asked about the potential source of the drones, Mayor Morris didn't hold back: "To be intentionally a little inflammatory, the state of New Jersey has been invaded by drones. The question and the problem and the nervousness is: by who? Because they are everywhere. There are hundreds of these things."
Reports of drone sightings aren't limited to Morris County. Residents across the state, from Cape May in the south to Sussex County in the north, have reported similar activity. Theories about the origin of the drones range from the possibility of military exercises linked to former US President Donald Trump, who owns property in the state, to organised drone enthusiasts. But the mayor remains sceptical. "The activity, the drones, the methodical scanning back and forth gives a lot of people pause," he said. Morris added, "It's all crazy speculation."
Mayor Morris also spoke about the need for transparency. While recognising that some government operations are classified for security reasons, he expressed the importance of local authorities being informed. "They either need to tell us, or trusted people around us, like county sheriffs, who can reassure us that they know what it is and they are comfortable with what it is," he said. "Or they need to go find out. They need to follow a drone home."
For now, the authorities are staying tight-lipped, leaving room for speculation, but one thing is clear: the drones have captured the public's imagination, raising questions about privacy, security, and transparency.
