President Joe Biden has spoken out to reassure Americans over the recent wave of mysterious drones spotted across the eastern United States, stating there is "nothing nefarious" about their presence. Reports of these drones have sparked widespread speculation about their origins and purpose, prompting investigations and public concern.
The unusual drone activity first came to light in November, when reports began surfacing of bright lights spotted in the night sky. The earliest accounts came from New Jersey, but sightings quickly spread to other states. Locations as diverse as residential areas and secure military sites, including Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, have been affected.
Since then, drones have been reported in at least six eastern states: New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Virginia. At one point, the drone sightings caused New York's Stewart International Airport to temporarily close its runways for an hour.
In comments to the media, President Biden addressed the sightings directly, stating, "It's nothing nefarious apparently, but they're checking it all out. There's a lot of drones authorised up there. I think one started it and they all - everybody wanted to get in the deal. But we're following this closely, but so far, no sense of danger."
Both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have previously stated that the drones pose no threat to national security. An FBI official commented, "I think there has been a slight overreaction." The agency also suggested that many sightings could be cases of "mistaken identity," where small, legally operated aircraft have been misinterpreted as drones.
The DHS echoed these sentiments, proposing that commercial drones might be behind the sightings. Meanwhile, military officials have ruled out any signs of malicious foreign involvement, and the Pentagon has confirmed that the drones are not operated by the US military. The investigation to determine whether any criminal or malicious intent is involved is ongoing.
The incidents have drawn attention to the frequent intrusions of unauthorised drones over military and sensitive sites. The Department of Defense has highlighted that such flights are not uncommon and often represent irresponsible use rather than deliberate threats. These concerns echo high-profile cases such as the Gatwick Airport disruption in 2018, which demonstrated the logistical challenges and risks posed by drones.

Meanwhile, public curiosity has been fuelled by a lack of clear answers. The sheer volume of professional and consumer drones in circulation makes investigating specific incidents challenging. Eyewitness accounts, such as descriptions of large rectangular objects with blinking lights, have only added to the sense of mystery and anxiety. Law enforcement and regulatory authorities are calling for clearer frameworks to manage the growing prevalence of drones.
The absence of definitive explanations has led to a variety of theories, ranging from secret government projects to foreign surveillance or even advanced alien technology. Despite these speculations, officials, including members of the House Intelligence Committee, have reassured the public that there is no evidence of foreign or malicious activity.
In response to rising concerns, some states, such as New York, are deploying drone detection systems to better monitor and manage the situation. State governments are also calling for greater resources and more authority to address the issue, highlighting the urgency for clearer regulation.
Public pressure for transparency has been amplified by criticisms from figures such as Donald Trump, who suggest that more information about the incidents may be available than is being shared.
For now, the mystery of the drones remains unresolved. While President Biden's comments may offer some reassurance, he hasn't said anything that the federal government hasn't been telling the public for days.
