Tired Man Sleeping
A paranormal hangover is the feeling of being drained or tired in the days following a paranormal investigation.

Many paranormal investigators say that they feel extremely drained, fatigued and irritable after an investigation. This can sometimes last for just a few hours, but sometimes can affect you for a whole day or more. Those who suffer from paranormal hangovers attribute it to the spirits at the ghost hunt using the investigators energy to fuel their paranormal activity.

However, not everyone experiences this. Some investigators with decades of experience of paranormal research and investigation, say they have never experienced what they would call a paranormal hangover or feel as if they have been drained of energy.

Does this mean that paranormal hangovers are a real unpleasant reminder of a vigil, or are they in the mind of those who experience it, the normal signs of tiredness, or perhaps even limited to a certain type of investigator or investigation?

It's hard to say for sure whether paranormal hangovers are real. After all some lucky people don't experience hangovers after a night of drinking, it might be as hard for them to believe that regular hangovers exist. All we know is that investigators do genuinely feel tired after a ghost hunt and whatever the reason behind that doesn't change the fact the the tiredness is real.

It could be the result of a supernatural drain on the investigator's energy, equally it could just be that spending a night investigating until the early hours of the morning is enough to have a knock-on effect the following day. There's also the possibility that it could be physical exhaustion as a result of wandering around a haunted building for several hours often in cold temperatures until late in the night. All this on top of your normal daytime exertions.

Below are two methods of keeping yourself protected and preventing paranormal hangovers.

Spiritual Protection

If you feel that your hangover is being caused by a supernatural energy thief, then you might want to take steps to protect yourself before the investigation takes place in every location. This is all about having a positive mindset, ensuring you've had enough sleep and are alert is an important part of this.

Take some time out before to ensure you're in the right headspace. You need to be sure that you are feeling strong, confident, stress free, rested and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

You can shield yourself from negative energy by simply ensuring that you are free of doubt, and pumped with positive vibes. If you are fearful or not emotionally fit and confident enough, then you should do what you can to perk yourself up, either through positive thinking, saying a prayer, meditation or by treating yourself to a drink or snack to raise your mood.

You may also consider carrying a form of spiritual protection or a defensive item which has specific meaning to you and your beliefs.

It doesn't really matter what the object is, if you feel strongly about it then the belief is that it is charged with your positive energy. Most commonly it's a form of jewellery like a bracelet, necklace or medallion. It can also be a tattoo or some kind of sacred item or anything else which makes them feel safe and secure.

Protective jewellery often includes symbols like the Celtic triple knot, known as a triquetra. Also a pentacle, specific runic symbols or a blue eye symbol usually made out of glass called a nazar, but often referred to incorrectly as the evil eye. It's actually a Middle Eastern talisman to ward off the evil eye, which is a curse believed to be cast by a malevolent glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware.

If you're thinking of getting some protective jewellery of your own, then silver is said to be good choice as it purifies its surroundings and interferes with spirit communication.

You may also consider an amulet of protection or a charm, which is usually made out of natural substances, crystals or semi-precious stones. There is a long-standing belief that crystals and certain stones can protect people from demons, demonic hauntings and possession. There isn't really a right or wrong when it comes to choosing the best stone to protect you, you should simply pick something that appeals to you that you can focus your positive energy on.

Traditionally stones like amber, black onyx, ruby, amethyst, jade and tourmaline are used. Peridot is said to ward off demons, and chrysoberyl is believe to specifically protect against possession. Iron is also thought to repel demons, in fact iron chains are said to be the only type of restraint that works on a demonic entity.

Physical Preparation

Preparing your body to avoid a paranormal hangover is actually fairly similar to the steps you would take to protect yourself from an alcohol induced hangover.

Again you should take some time out before the investigation to ensure that you are in the right mindset for the night. You need to be sure that you are feeling strong, confident, stress free, rested and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

It goes without saying that you should try to get a good night's sleep the night before the investigation. Staying up late on an investigation can disrupt your entire sleep schedule, which will obviously contribute to the symptoms of a hangover.

If you are unable to sleep in and take it easy the next day, it might not be the best time for you to go on a ghost hunt. The following day you should fight the urge to nap during the day, and should go to bed at your normal time to force your body back into your normal routine.

Although there's nothing about paranormal investigations that cause dehydration, you should ensure you drink plenty of water before, during and after - especially if you are investigating in warm locations or during hot weather. Dehydration can contribute to hangover-like symptoms including thirst, headache, fatigue and dry mouth.

Tiredness and the feeling of being rundown can sometimes be associated with low levels of blood sugar, a condition known as hypoglycaemia. It may contribute to symptoms, such as weakness and headaches.

Before embarking on an investigation be sure you have eaten enough, especially as your day will be longer than normal and you'll be active throughout the night. Stick to nutritious meals throughout the day and consider a late-night meal before the investigation to help maintain your blood sugar levels.
