Shrewsbury Prison, one of the UK's most notoriously haunted locations, is looking for a Paranormal Team Leader to guide visitors through its chilling 'Ghost Hunting Behind Bars' events.

This unique role offers the opportunity to lead groups through the dark and eerie corridors of the former jail, where the spirits of past inmates are said to linger. The prison, built in 1791, served as Shropshire's county jail until its closure in 2013. Today, it operates as a heritage-led tourist attraction, but its sinister past continues to captivate those who walk its halls.

Many believe that A-Wing is the most haunted part of the prison, possibly due to its grim history of suicides. At one point, deaths in this part of the prison were alarmingly frequent, with some reports suggesting that at least one suicide occurred there every week. Paranormal investigators and visitors alike have reported feelings of sadness and unease in the area, with some convinced that the tormented souls of former inmates remain trapped within its walls.

The prison also has a history of judicial executions, and in 1885, five prisoners were hanged in a single day. The execution room, used until 1961, was later converted into a group session room, yet it remains a hotspot for paranormal activity. Its location next to the condemned cell and directly above the old mortuary may contribute to the eerie atmosphere that many claim to experience when visiting the space.

Shrewsbury Prison has drawn the attention of ghost hunters from around the world. In 2016, Nick Groff and Katrina Weidman investigated the site for the US paranormal series 'Paranormal Lockdown.' During their time in the execution room, Nick, who was alone in the space, witnessed the noose suddenly jerk and begin to swing. The moment was caught on camera, with footage confirming that he was the only person present and that all the windows were closed, ruling out the possibility of a draught causing the movement.

Beyond the execution room, the prison's C-Wing has also gained a reputation for unexplained activity. When the prison was operational, some officers refused to work in this part of the building alone at night, claiming to have been pushed down stairs or to have heard the sound of doors slamming and footsteps echoing through the corridors. The atmosphere, according to those who have experienced it, can shift suddenly, making even the most skeptical visitor feel uneasy. Among the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a female prisoner, often seen wearing a grey uniform and walking along the upper levels of the prison. Witnesses say she moves from Cell 3 towards the execution room, her presence adding to the sense of unease felt by those who dare to venture into the building after dark.

The new Paranormal Team Leader will be responsible for leading guests through these haunted spaces, providing an immersive ghost-hunting experience. The role requires someone with knowledge of paranormal investigation techniques, as well as experience using ghost-hunting equipment such as spirit boards and table tipping methods. As well as delivering a compelling and engaging experience, the Paranormal Team Leader will ensure that visitors are comfortable and supported, particularly those who may feel unnerved by their surroundings. Maintaining the prison's ghost-hunting equipment, ensuring the space is prepared for events, and assisting with the general upkeep of the site are also key responsibilities.

The role involves working closely with the Events & Experiences Manager, contributing to the wider success of the prison's visitor attractions, and ensuring that all health and safety procedures are followed. Strong communication skills and the ability to engage an audience are essential, as is the ability to think on one's feet and problem-solve during events.

This position is an exciting opportunity for anyone with a passion for the paranormal and a desire to share that enthusiasm with others. Previous experience in ghost-hunting events or a background in customer service would be advantageous, but the most important qualities are reliability, enthusiasm, and the ability to create a memorable and engaging experience for visitors. Shrewsbury Prison has a long and chilling history, and for those drawn to the supernatural, this role offers the chance to spend time in one of the most haunted locations in the country.
