The fifth season of Netflix’s revived 'Unsolved Mysteries' is set to return on October 2, featuring four new episodes, three of which focus on paranormal cases that are sure to intrigue fans of the supernatural. This latest release promises an exploration of eerie events and unsolved phenomena, with the paranormal episodes offering viewers a spooky treat just in time for Halloween.

The highlight for most paranormal enthusiasts will undoubtedly be 'The Roswell UFO Incident'. This episode revisits one of the most famous UFO encounters of all time: the alleged crash of an unidentified flying object near Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. Although this isn't the first time the Roswell incident has been featured on 'Unsolved Mysteries'. It made its debut back in 1989 during the show's original run, the case remains a cornerstone of UFO lore and continues to captivate public imagination.

In 1947, reports surfaced of strange debris found in the desert near Roswell, leading to speculation that a UFO had crashed. While the US military initially reported the discovery of a "flying disc," the narrative quickly changed, and the incident was dismissed as nothing more than a weather balloon.

However, rumours of a cover-up have persisted for decades, with some believing the wreckage was that of an extraterrestrial craft and that alien bodies were recovered from the crash site. The latest episode, directed by Gabe Torres, promises to take a fresh look at this iconic case, possibly introducing new evidence or perspectives to a story that has fascinated conspiracy theorists and UFO researchers for generations.

Another episode likely to capture the interest of paranormal enthusiasts is 'My Paranormal Partner'. Directed by Robert M. Wise, this episode centres on paranormal researcher Don Philips, who claims to work alongside an entity from the spirit world. According to Don, this entity communicates with him and assists in his investigations, making it an unlikely yet essential partner in his work. In the episode, a renowned parapsychologist meets with Don in both Seattle and the UK to examine his story and attempt to test these paranormal claims.

'Mysterious Mutilations' is also bound to intrigue paranormal fans. Directed by Robert M. Wise, this case focusses on a disturbing string of cattle mutilations in Oregon, where ranchers have discovered their livestock dead and disfigured in ways that defy explanation. The animals are often found with organs removed with near-surgical precision, yet there are no signs of struggle or blood.

For decades, similar cases have been reported across the US, with some attributing the mutilations to UFO activity, while others believe a secretive government or cult group may be responsible. Authorities remain baffled, with no concrete answers to explain these mysterious deaths.

The season opens with a true crime-themed episode, 'The Park Bench Murders'. Directed by Skye Borgman, this episode focusses on the tragic deaths of two friends who were shot in broad daylight at a busy park in Cleveland, Ohio. Despite the presence of numerous potential witnesses, no one seems to have seen the crime take place, leaving authorities and the victims' families grasping for answers.

'Unsolved Mysteries' has a legacy stretching back to 1987, when it first began documenting cold cases, paranormal encounters, and unexplained events. The original run of the show, which amassed nearly 300 episodes, covered everything from disappearances to strange supernatural phenomena, making it one of the most iconic mystery series of its time. It was also the first mainstream TV show to cover the Roswell UFO incident, introducing the case to millions of viewers long before it became the globally recognised story it is today.

The revival of 'Unsolved Mysteries' in 2020 came from Shawn Levy, the executive producer behind Netflix's 'Stranger Things', who worked alongside the show's original creators, John Cosgrove and Terry Dunn Meurer. The reboot has successfully captured the same eerie and gripping tone that made the original such a hit, while updating the format for a new generation of viewers. With its mix of cold cases and paranormal investigations, 'Unsolved Mysteries' continues to offer a chilling yet enthralling look at the world's unsolved phenomena.
