Paranormal YouTuber Amy's Crypt and her partner Jared have just taken on a major new project - one of England's most notorious haunted homes. The couple recently announced they've bought The Cage, a historic and allegedly haunted house in the Essex village of St Osyth.
St Osyth is known for its dark history. In the 16th century, it became one of the many places caught up in the witch trials that swept through England. In 1582, twelve women accused of witchcraft were locked up in the village's small prison, known as The Cage. Among them was Ursula Kemp, a woman who was believed to have cursed local villagers, spoiled beer, and even caused deaths.
The Cage itself is a simple two-bedroom cottage, but what makes it unique is that the original lockup still exists within the building. These types of lockups - basic single-room jails used to hold people temporarily - were common in villages hundreds of years ago, but only seven survive today. The Cage is the only one that's been built into a home.
After the witch trials, The Cage remained in use as a prison for men, women, and children until 1908. At one point, it was even used to quarantine people with the bubonic plague, a deadly disease that killed many in the house. Eventually, it became a private home, but most who lived there didn't stay long. It's often said that nobody can live in The Cage for long - owners come and go, with reports of hauntings continuing to this day.
Past residents have described cold spots, strange shadows, unexplained noises, and even being physically touched. There have been sightings of apparitions (ghostly figures), as well as claims of poltergeist activity - paranormal events where objects move or are thrown without any clear cause.
Amy and Jared's livestream announcement revealed that the house has been empty for at least two years. It's currently in poor condition, with no heating, exposed wires, damp, rot, and crumbling brickwork. Despite this, the couple say they plan to restore the house carefully and respectfully, both in terms of its structure and its haunted history.
Their goal is to preserve The Cage's legacy while using it as a base for serious paranormal research. Rather than rushing out short videos, they plan to create long-form, in-depth content exploring the activity at the property. They also hope to test out new ghost-hunting equipment in the house.
There's even a chance that one day the public might be able to visit. They've floated the idea of opening The Cage for overnight stays or turning part of it into a small museum, but that's a long way off.
In the livestream, Amy said, "There are a lot of stories associated with this place with ghosts and the paranormal and there are so many different types of paranormal activities that have happened here."
She later wrote, "We bought one of England's most haunted houses: THE CAGE!!! Thanks to everyone who tuned into our live announcement the other night. The outpouring of support and kind words has meant a lot to us. We're hard at work preserving the residence for the future and getting to know our new ghostly pals."
As Amy and Jared begin this new chapter, fans of the paranormal will no doubt be watching closely to see what eerie encounters and strange happenings unfold inside this famously haunted home.
